According to a study conducted by Harvard University, overwhelming medical bills are primary reason why people file for bankruptcy. The study looked at a sample of over 2,300 bankruptcy filings and it was found that 78 percent of filers had experienced significant debt or financial losses due to medical bills or illness. Hospital bills can fluctuate wildly from location to location for the same exact procedure. In many case patients are not told what to expect as far as the bill goes for their treatment or are given a complicated explanation that is difficult to understand. Not everyone can afford health insurance and those who can often have high deductibles or otherwise find that their insurance only covers a small portion of the total bill. If you are having difficulty keeping up with your bills and financial obligations then speak with a bankruptcy attorney about what options are available to you.
Mother Stunned by Hospital Bill for Cut Finger
One southern California mom was shocked when she received the bill recently for treatment of a minor injury to her son. Her son, nine years old, had been bitten on the finger tip by one of the family dogs. It didn’t seem like a major injury but it was bleeding and she decided it was better to be safe than sorry. She ended up having to take her son to the emergency room of the hospital down the street from her house because her own pediatrician’s office and the nearby urgent care clinic were both closed. She was informed at the ER that there was a $500 fee just to be seen. The doctor examined the wound, said it was minor and didn’t need stitches but ordered an x-ray just in case (which ended up being clear). A nurse irrigated the wound and put a bandage on it, gave the boy a Tylenol and sent them home. Then she got a bill for over $1,700. She was shocked. Especially in light of the fact that she and her family pay over $700 a month for medical insurance which would only cover about $200 of the bill after the deductable.
