New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a warning to citizens to beware of a misleading tax collection letters. Complaints have been filed statewide from people who already have overwhelming circumstances concerning large amounts of debt. The "notices" that have been arriving appear to be official tax collection letters. The letters contain threatening statements which make the recipient fear that they may be about to be sued or subjected to serious collection actions. In actuality, these false notices which contain statements such as "bank accounts and asset seizure pending" are actually from companies claiming to be able to reduce or negotiate debt. The letters look very convincing and seem to use fear of severe legal action, seizure of property, liens and other such actions to get the individual receiving the letter to call the toll free number listed. In some cases a person receives a letter which states that the "State of New York may be preparing to garnish your wages, freeze your assets and bank accounts and/or seize any/or all property to satisfy your outstanding tax debt of $22,628." Governor Cuomo is urging people who receive a questionable or alarming notice to call the New York State Department Financial Services (DFS) consumer help line. Official notices from the State Department of Taxation and Finance always come on the department's letterhead. The State DFS is investigating the scam.
